Gullah People Dafuskie Island Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe

A series of photographs taken by photographer Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe between 1977 and 1981 of the Gullah or Geechee people has been dontated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture by Bank of America.

The Gullah people are a community of the descendents of freed slaves who inhabited Daufuskie island off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. At the time of Moutoussamy-Ashe’s photographs, less than 100 people were living on the island. The museum and the exhibition are slated to open to the public in late 2015.
