Malia Obama is heading to Harvard. Over the past 2 years, the media has been speculating over what college the elder First Daughter would be attending come this fall. After Malia was spotted interning in New York last summer, where she also visited New York University and Columbia, the big apple seemed like a likely choice.

“The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter Malia will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the Class of 2021. Malia will take a gap year before beginning school,” the White House said in a statement.

Malia, who turns 18 in July is currently a senior at the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. Younger sister Sasha also attends the school, and earlier this year year President Obama announced plans to remain in D.C. after the end of his term in order to allow her to complete her education at Sidwell.

Over the years, many graduates of Sidwell Friends have gone on to attend Harvard. This year marked the most selective admissions cycle at Harvard in the university’s history, with only 5.2% of applicants receiving acceptance letters.
