2014 was a big year for Mo’ne Davis. The powerhouse Little League pitcher was an inspiration to both boys and girls who wanted to “throw like a girl” as they watched Davis strike out the boys. Her superior skills on the mound attracted quite a bit of media attention, landing her on the cover of Sports Illustrated, along with spreads in both Harper’s Bazaar and Teen Vogue. Davis was also the subject of a short documentary, directed by Spike Lee. Despite all of the media surrounding her, the young athlete always remained gracious and poised — celebrating her team and all of the people who worked with her and supported her every step of the way.

As the perfect end to a banner year, Mo’ne Davis was recently awarded the honor of “Female Athlete of the Year” by Associated Press.

“A lot of adults around me help out, taught me to be respectful, to be calm during everything and not let anything get to you,” Davis said after learning of her latest honor.

Davis is the youngest recipient ever to win this award.
