“She said, ‘You have more boobs than other girls,” Alexus Miller-Wigfall tells Penn Live. “‘The other girls have less to show.'”

This is what the teen, a student at Harrisburg High School in Pennsylvania, says she was told was the reason for her suspension. Apparently, her body type caused school officials to deem the dress that she wore to prom, “too revealing.”

Alexus’ mother, Alisha Sneed, claimed that she went out of her way to ensure that the dress that Alexus would be wearing to prom in the week of April 20th, was appropriate and satisfied the school’s guidelines. She sent pictures of the dress to the school for approval prior to the big night, and even made alterations to the dress to make it more modest. Despite her efforts, Alexus was still slapped with a referral for an in-school suspension.

When Sneed discovered that no other girls were suspended, even though some of Alexus’ classmates attended prom wearing dresses that were much more revealing than hers, she realized that her daughter had been discriminated against due to her size.

“My daughter’s dress was tasteful and classy,” she said. “I don’t think that it’s fair that my daughter was singled out.”

Kirsten Keys, the district spokeswoman initially refused to respond to requests for a comment on the situation, but eventually offered a copy of the school’s prom guidelines to the media along with a statement.

“The Harrisburg School District believes that proms are celebratory and memorable events in the lives of its students. Our administration, school board, faculty and advisors strive to ensure that students enjoy themselves immensely, while abiding by attire guidelines and expectations that support and promote the elegance of the prom season.”

The school backtracked after Alexus’ story began to circulate online and teen received an outpouring of support.

Alexus now tells Penn Live that she was told the suspension was overturned, but the district has not responded to requests to confirm this.
