You are not the father…

Directed by Steven Spielberg, “Extant” stars Halle Berry as one confused astronaut. When we first meet Berry’s character Molly Woods, she’s back on earth and not feeling to well. We are also immediately bombarded with technology, so you know that it’s the future. A future where apparently fashion and architecture haven’t changed much, but we have tons of technology ranging from self-driving cars to some sort of space-age garbage can to actual children.

At first the series seemed like it was bracing viewers for slow pacing, but things quickly picked up once Molly learns about her mystery pregnancy and struggles with how she will tell her husband. The show then drops lots of breadcrumbs, in the form of questions, that will most likely lead to more questions. All of this happens while Molly unknowingly faces her antagonist in the form of a trope-y, possibly evil, mysterious, rich Japanese business man whose main weapon is HIPAA violations.

Overall the series feels like a 90’s/early 2000’s sci-fi thriller with a bit more introspection and character development. I give it B+, for what I’ve seen so far. Watch a trailer for the series below, or catch the entire first episode on CBS.com. “Extant” airs Wednesdays on CBS at 9pm.
