8th Grade Metal Bands Lands 1.7 Million Dollar Record Deal With Sony.

Founded in 2007, Unlocking the Truth is a Brooklyn-based metal band which has steadily been making waves for some time now. The band competed at “Showtime At The Apollo” in 2012, then went on to win the first round of Afropunk’s “Battle of the Bands” in 2013, in addition to performing at Afropunk Festival that same year. Afropunk was instrumental in taking Unlocking the Truth to the next level, the band has since had a steady stream of buzz and performances which include opening for Guns N’ Roses and features in publications like SPIN and New York magazines.

Now Unlocking the Truth, which is made up of made up of guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, bassist Alec Atkins, 13, and drummer Jarad Dawkins, 12 is making history by signing a 1.7 million dollar deal with Sony Records. According to Gothamist, the deal comes with a 60,000 advance.
