“Sex and the City” was the late 90’s/early aughts cable phenomenon that influenced a generation of young women — in a lot of the wrong ways. The show, which took place in a mythical all-white city was often blasted by critics for it’s blatant lack of diversity and seriously cringe-worthy manner of addressing race.

As media in the United States has proven time and time again, mere inclusion doesn’t necessarily solve diversity issues. The controversy surrounding an upcoming all-Black Brazilian parody of SATC titled “Sexo e as Negas”, which, loosely translated means sex and the negresses”, proves just that. The show is one of the many examples of how black women are often portrayed as hypersexual “jezebels”. These articles from “Black Women of Brazil”, talk about the history behind such images of black women in Brazil and also how Afro-Brazilian women are using social media to fight back.
