Art. M. Lamar’s NEGROGOTHIC Deconstructs Race, Sexuality, Violence, and History.

M. Lamar

You might recognize artist M. Lamar, twin brother of Laverne Cox, from his acting stint as a pre-transition Sophia on the hit series Orange is the New Black. Much like his sister, when he’s not acting, he’s encouraging society to take a critical look at gender, masculinity, race, and sexuality in the context of historical trauma.

M. Lamar employs a black metal aesthetic to create his performance art, which although it makes clear references to Robert Mapplethorpe, is informed by black feminist writers such as bell hooks and Toni Morrison.
