Soraya Jean-Louis McElroy is a Haitian-born mixed media artist originally from Brooklyn, New York, who currently lives and works in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her works incorporate aspects of Afrofuturism, Womanism, the Diaspora, and motherhood. Her background and work as a doula, an anthropologist and a counselor have all had influences on her work. She also credits artists and writers like Wangechi Mutu and Octavia Butler as sources of inspiration.

An an interview earlier this year with BrassyBrown.com, the artist had this to say of her work and background,

I’m not a formally trained artist – my experiences, ideas, dreams for my people and Afro-Caribbean-ness has given me valuable skills to explore and express what’s in my heart. That’s the best training to me: just loving and embracing my whole black womyn self and presenting my truth(s) to the world.”
