Olympic Swimmer Simone Manuel Becomes the First African-American Woman to Win Gold in an Individual Swimming Event. #Olympics #Olympics2016

Simone Manuel

Olympic Swimmer Simone Manuel made history earlier this evening after tying with Canadian Penny Oleksiak to win a gold medal in the women’s 100-meter freestyle.

In an emotional moment, Manuel quickly took off her goggles and looked at the scoreboard in a mix of shock and pure joy. Her win marks the first time that an African-American women has scored gold in an individual Olympic swimming event as well as the first time an American woman has taken the 100m gold since 1984. Both Manuel and Oleksiak set an Olympic record with a total time of 52.70.
