Throughout his presidency, Obama has brought up the importance of making education accessible to all Americans. In a video uploaded the the White House Facebook page, the President addressed the public with his proposal for two years of free college education to all Americans. “Put simply, what I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everyone who’s willing to work for it,” he stated in the short video.

The White House estimates, that this plan, if successful, would save the average American community college student approximately $3,800 in college costs.

According to White House domestic-policy director Cecilia Muñoz, the proposal is a federal-state partnership. The federal government would cover 75% of college costs, the state government would cover the remaining amount.

The proposal would need to be passed through the Republican-controlled Congress, and will likely face opposition.
