South African Kwaai Diva Umlilo Is an Eccentric Preacher in This Music Video Commentary on Violence in South Africa.

Umlilo

Cape Town’s Diva Umlilo is known for a look which pushes gender boundaries and thoughtful music that serves as social commentary. In the music video for “Chain Gang,” the artist features as a preacher at a funeral, sharing a prophesy. The various characters at the funeral illustrate how violence as a result of marginalization affects people from all walks of life. Umlilo, had this to say about the video,

We live in a world where people keep getting gunned down everyday for all sorts of reasons they cannot control from skin colour, religion, poverty or sexuality. At the other end of the spectrum is this vacuous pursuit of money and bling. It all has a chain effect making us all part of a chain gang whether we like it or not. The song explores this perpetual cycle to survive, to live and die with dignity in this modern jungle.
