Black Barbie, a recently premiered documentary on Netflix, explores the origins of Black Barbie dolls. Brought to you by Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland production company, the doc traces the iconic doll’s origins from 1980 to present day.

The first Black Barbie doll was designed by Kitty Perkins and came in a box that said, “She’s Black! She’s beautiful! She’s dynamite.”

Perkins, a native of North Carolina, studied fashion design in Los Angeles and worked for a designer before landing a job at Barbie parent company Mattel. She became the iconic company’s first Black designer in 1976.
