Watch This. Episode 1 of ‘Women On Sex.’ Black South African Women Dissect Cultural Attitudes Surrounding the Concepts of Purity and Virginity.

Women on Sex

Created by Mmabatho Montsho, an actress and filmmaker from Johannesburg, South Africa, Women on Sex is a new web series that features black South African women speaking candidly about sex and cultural attitudes towards sex.

The 10-part series includes perspectives from a variety of women of all ages, including media personalities, pastors, doctors, and more.

“There are so many factors that influence not only how and when black women have sex, but also how, where and when we are able to talk about it freely,” said Montsho. “Social media has provided a wonderful platform for black women to ensure that their voices are heard and as a budding director, I felt I could contribute another platform for candid conversations about sex and to put it on record. It is a conversation that needs to be encouraged beyond Women’s Month.”

The first episode of Women on Sex, “Virginity,” unpacks the idea of virginity and purity in the context of religion. Despite the fact that a diverse group of women feature in this episode, what’s most striking is the cultural commonality they share when talking about sex, regardless of the disparity in their lifestyle choices.
