Exhibition Review . Transcending Boundaries At Aabru Art in London.

Transcending Boundaries, West African Art, Aabru Art London

The Transcending Boundaries exhibition is a celebration of excellence in West African Contemporary art. Aabru Art has successfully brought together a collection of pieces that reflects this excellence in London’s Mall Galleries.  There is clearly a growing appetite for contemporary art from West African Artists and by curating this exhibition it is clear why that is the case. The raw, colourful vibrancy of the pieces took us to the places that the artists themselves see.

The elegant yet powerful wood sculptures by Reuben Ugbine were particularly evocative, symbolising the strength and beauty of love in humanity and the grace of the human form. Abiodun Olaku’s photo-realistic oil painting were a touching ode to the towns and cities so familiar to many Nigerians. Intricate metal work by Fidelis Odogwu is almost poetic, with such noble fluidity, one forgets that it is metal that is used to creative these powerful works of art.  The bold, colourful works of  Edosa Ogiugo took us on a journey of visual pleasure and sensuality, a visual expression of harmonic motion brought to life on canvas.

We were also able to view the beautifully inspired textiles of Banke Kuku, with a range of furniture on display which added a sense of “homecoming” to the exhibition.
