The World’s Biggest Festivals

The festival is society’s ultimate heterotopia. A celebration of music, expression and liberation, thousands upon thousands of Britons flock to festivals, both within and outside the UK, every single year.

Especially in the summer seasons, it becomes important to know which festivals across the world are unmissable. With the intention of attending or not, let us revel in some of these glorious events.

Glastonbury

An event with great history and cultural significance, Glastonbury is perhaps one of the UK’s most beloved festivals. Whether it be guitar music or dance music, Glasto has hosted them all. From Arctic Monkeys to DJ Pierre, this annual experience never fails to book some big names.

Wireless

Whilst Wireless may not draw in some of the world’s largest crowds, it has made our list for its reputation as the go-to festival amongst dance music and hip hop fans. Since its birth in 2005, Wireless has managed to pull an astonishing selection of artists. Public Enemy, Daft Punk, Massive Attack, Faithless, Jay Z, Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Kanye West and The Chemical Brothers have all graced the stages of this festival.

Other noteworthy festivals include Coachella, Summerfest, Mawazine, Woodstock in Poland, Rock in Rio, Sziget and Donauinselfest in Vienna. The latter, pulling in a breath-taking 3.1 million in 2016, is perhaps the largest on the planet. Held on an island in the middle of the Danube River, it is open air, free and held every single summer.
