Phindile Thengeni is an emerging fashion stylist from South Africa. While the country boasts a diverse fashion scene, complete with a host of publications and a diverse street style scene, its industry is not immune to the gender politics that pervade fashion markets all over the world. In a seemingly liberal environment mostly staffed by women and dominated with images of women, sexism can still have an effect on one’s career and strict adherence to gender roles can affect how we create and process fashion images. In her ongoing “Does This Suit Me,” shot by Liam Lynch, Phindile Thengeni teams up with fellow creatives to stretch the creative boundaries of fashion and present different paradigms for gender and beauty, with the stylist herself as the subject in many of the images.

The ongoing series features new installations monthly on Phindile’s Instagram page.
